Here is a guideline to help you decide what would be best for you. We
determined our rating based on at least one item from each level.
Level 1 - Chillin'
- 1-3 hours of hiking per day
- Up to 3 miles of hiking per day
- Flat terrain with little elevation change
Level 2 - Not Just Roughin' It Yet
- 2-5 hours of hiking per day
- 4-8 miles of hiking per day (depending on terrrain)
- Hills with some elevation gain
Level 3 - Moderate (for the novice hiker or backpacker with moderate
fitness)
- 5-6 hours of hiking per day
- Up to an average of 10 miles of hiking per day (depending on
terrrain)
- Mountainous terrain, but not too steep
Level 4 - Vigorous (for fit travelers)
- Up to an average of 12 miles of hiking per day
- Mountainous terrain, canyons
Level 5 - Strenuous (for very fit travelers)
- 10+ hours of hiking per day on average
- 12+ miles of hiking per day on average
- Mountainous terrain, canyons
