This isolated canyon in southern Arizona is a bastion of untouched natural beauty. Only fifty permits for entry into the preserve are issued per day, so you’ll be able to experience the canyon in its pure state. Aravaipa is completely undeveloped; there are no campgrounds, signage, well-defined trails or other facilities in the canyon.

You will be surrounded by the native riparian vegetation, including cottonwood, ash, willow, and sycamore trees. The Aravaipa Creek flows throughout the year, a lovely contrast to the desert landscape. In addition to the canyon’s diverse greenery, Aravaipa is full of wildlife enjoying their natural habitat. The creek is home to seven varieties of native fish.

The Perfect Trip for Birders

Aravaipa is best known for its bird species. Over one hundred fifty varieties of native birds have been seen in the canyon. The cacti, which populate to canyon’s rocky outcrops, are and ideal home for woodpeckers and owls.

Other desert dwellers who make their home in the canyon are mule and white-tail deer, coyotes, coatimundi, and javelina. High above the canyon, desert bighorn sheep peer down to observe your progress. This is one time you don’t want to forget your camera!

Experience the Remains of Ancient Civilizations

Not to be forgotten as you contemplate all that Aravaipa offers are the remains left by native cultures. The canyon was once home to the Mogollon, Hohokam and Saladoan people groups. You can still see the vestiges of these ancient peoples in the Turkey Creek cliff dwelling. Later, Aravaipa became home to a potion of the western Apache tribes until they were relocated to the San Carlos reservation.

Because of the untouched environment the canyon provides, you still may encounter traces of these historic civilizations.
